He praises Reed as "combining a soft touch with a hard head." Since the 1990s, the official State Flag of Georgia had been a center of controversy as it incorporated the historic Confederate flag dating to the American Civil War, which among some people is thought to symbolize resistance to cultural changes in the state. After 2001 changes to the flag which removed this, Governor of Georgia Roy Barnes, who had led the flag-redesign effort, was defeated for re-election; many thought it was the result of the political backlash. In June 2015, Reed praised the Supreme Court's ruling in favor of same-sex marriage and ordered Atlanta City Hall to be lit in rainbow colors in celebration of what he called "a momentous victory for freedom, equality, and love." Along with Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, Reed was a major proponent of a campaign for a transportation special-purpose local-option sales tax, which would have levied a 1% local sales tax for ten years, from 2013 until 2022, to fund transportation infrastructure projects.Reed said that the passage of the referendum would add jobs and alleviate congestion in the city, while "failing to pass the measure would be economically damaging" for Atlanta.During his internship he learned about a federal dollar-for-dollar matching grant program. In his senior year and as the undergraduate trustee on the University's Board of Trustees, he instituted a -per-semester student fee increase to be matched by the federal grant, with monies to be earmarked for the university's endowment. The fees were expected to total nearly 0,000 per semester.

Andrew's cross, was a continuing topic of debate for southern heritage proponents.

There remain questions regarding whether Mayor Reed knew of the book and its contents before Cochran was fired.

Whether it's dating or marrying someone of a different race, interracial relationships are not a new phenomenon among Asian Americans. It was not until 1967, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, that the U. Supreme Court ruled in the case that such laws were unconstitutional. As suc, one could argue that it's only been in recent years that interracial marriages have become common in American society.… continue reading »

My kids lived a half a mile and had to take the bus. I became a grandmother this year and fell in love again with sweet Julianna, my son, Eric's daughter. In 1975 I was transferred to San Francisco by my company and moved to Sonoma County in 1991. Our home was located directly across from PS 176 and my neighbors included, the Dawsons, the Whites, the Persons, Russells and the Filippis(on 238th Street behind us.)We had the best childhood ever and growing up in Cambria Heights/Laurelton was terrific and safe. I then moved to Valley Stream when I was 18..to believe I was ever 18. There was Alan Goldman "gompers", Mark Kessler "count" (Mark got the nick name "count" because he couldn't! We have been living in Dix Hills/Melville since 1974. Recently moved to Carbondale, CO, a short drive to magnificent skiing and summer music festival in Aspen. Still keep in touch with many who never graduated from PS 156 but transferred to JHS 59, and then went on to Jackson. After JHS 59 I went to M&A and lost touch with all my school friends (Madelyn Berman, Maxine Weinstein, Judi Schoenfeld, Margery Lesk, Frankie Fuchs, Jerry Solomon, Howie Polera). (I stage managed "The Man Who Came to Dinner" in 1966 directed by Mr. I have a daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter who live in Manhattan. In Laurelton from 1958 until about 1972 when I got out of the service and "left home". I have 2 married sons and four fantastic grandchildren. 38 for K and 1st and then transferred to 156 through the 5th grade then we moved to Fla. I married a Jackson alum, Warren Muchnick, 24 years ago. My wife of almost 24 years, Bea, and I live in Chester NY, but are in the process of downsizing and eventually looking to go south to the Vero Beach area. Though I last saw Jeff Goodman in 1986, aside from Jill (and on TV Barbie Seagal Nevins), I can't recall seeing anyone else since the 1984 mass Jackson reunion.… continue reading »
